Picked up a new Opteka 85mm f1.8 for my Nikon D7100. Considering the lens was $100 (!!), I’m very happy with the initial results. My fiancé was kind enough to be the guinea pig. Picture data: Manual focus, natural light, f1.8, 1/1250, iso100.

Wow, you got that wide open focus better with a manual lens than my crappy old D3100 does with my 1.8 AF!

The dandelion, glasses, earrings, or lens?

Lens. Not that my D3100 can take much advantage of what it has to offer, but still.

Manual focusing is very difficult with the viewfinders that aren't designed for it, IMHO.

I find it very easy to manual focus with the viewfinder of the D7100. Even faster and more accurate than my split-prism slr. Nikon’s modern viewfinder focus assist is sweet.

Cool man! Sounds like a good buy. I rented an 85mm f1.4 once for a wedding. Really fun!
I’m really tempted to upgrade to the 7100.... but I’m a sucker for full frame, and wouldn’t mind getting a refurbished D610.
I’m still rocking my D80 circa 2007.
DECISIONS!!!!

I love full frame too, but the feel of the 7100 is just perfect for my hands.

I’ll have to check that out. I’m invested in Canon cameras. I started out with a Pentax Spotmatic 35 years ago, which were designed for manual focusing (obvously). I only wish I could dependable manually focus; if I could, I’d probably leave the AF turned off by default. I don’t like depending on it.

That’s a lovely image of your fiance, by the way.

I agree. Even on my AF lenses, I’m still doing it manually about 75% of the time. I’m coming from a Nikon F100 that has the same manual focus assist as the D7100 so that has made the transition pretty easy.

Thank you very much :)

I’m not sure how I wound up with Canon over Nikon in the first place; my first Canon digital was a G5 and I guess I just stayed with it. The focus assist might be the first feature I’ve heard of that I’d prefer on a Nikon. But I’m too deeply invested to switch.

Yeah, the only reason that I am a Nikon user is because at some point I had an old Nikon point and shoot. Funny how one decision can impact our whole camera system down the line.

Yup. I was yearbook adviser at the high school where I used to teach. We had a Nikon, and I bought some more Nikons and I was constantly frustrated because I couldn’t figure out how to do the things I knew how to do with a Canon.
